OBEDIENCE

Yesterday, I attended a ‘Hearing God’ Wellness Day, hosted by my friendly neighborhood prayer warrior, Kylee. She invited us into her beautiful home for 13 hours (well I was late so, for me: 12 and a half hours) full of rest and retreat-style relaxation. From my first somatic massage, to the energizing foods, to spiritual guidance that brought me to tears, the day, end to end, was so intentional and inviting of the Holy Spirit.

I grew up in a Christian household – church on Sunday, grace before meals, prayers before bed. I can recite the Old Testament and the 23rd Psalm by heart. Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond, and Yolanda Adams (with a healthy mix of Whitney, Luther, and Michael) were the soundtrack of my childhood. I proclaimed Jesus as my Lord and Savior and was baptized at a young age.

And yet, there was another level to it all that I didn’t tap into, or even really know about, until later in life.

My husband comes from a family on this level. The type of family that did everything mine did, and also read devotionals daily. And prayed together. And made almost every lesson a biblical one. The names of God are constantly on their tongues. All things point back to His glory.

It has been interesting to integrate into the world of Christianity as a daily practice; to learn and apply things as an adult that my partner had grown up with and saw as common knowledge. I imagine that to have been frustrating for him at times, but he has always handled it – always handled me – with grace.

Yesterday’s retreat was such a powerful catalyst in this season. A whole day set aside to ask, listen, reflect, and commune. I’m grateful that Kylee was obedient to the Lord’s instruction to host us, I’m inspired by the vulnerability of all who were present, and I’m excited about how God will use me.

I must only be obedient.
